This Christmas

Merry Christmas!  We pulled up to Grandma and Granddaddy Weldon’s house with our van honking and kids cheering!
What a wonderful Christmas we had!  Every year the ladies wear high heels on Christmas eve.
Mine are the red ones.
We also do a guys vs. girls crossword puzzle.  Guys won this year. Oh, well!
Our first belly shot of the cousins!  Two weeks apart, and both very ready to hold these little babies in our ARMS instead of our bellies!

Christmas eve also brings Santa Clause, in all his hilarity.  We won’t reveal who he is… but he does a pretty awesome job of making the kids’ night extra special.  This tradition was happening when “Santa” used to sit on Santa’s lap…

Nadine left a plate of cookies and milk and a note for Santa.  This is the first time she’s done this.  She thought of it all on her own, and I’m really not sure where it came from.
The boys slept in the basement.  Just too cute not to squeeze!
Christmas morning brought presents and laughter and fun!
It also brought monkey bread and dutch blitz!
We are so thankful for our wonderful Christmas.  God has truly blessed us abundantly!

>Breakfast in Bed

>So this morning I was woken up early with a hot cup of tea delivered to my bed.  Matthew and I were able to talk a bit before he headed out for his last day of work this week.  So nice!  I got up and had a delightful quiet morning, and the boys stayed in their beds until 7:30 on the dot!  Nadine came down bleary-eyed and looked quite put out when she saw me.  She informed me that I was supposed to still be in bed so they could make me a surprise breakfast.  I told her I would go back up and pretend to be asleep.

I then cuddled under my covers and was really excited about actually catching a few winks.  It was a little hard, though, when all I could hear were excited voices coming up from the kitchen exclaiming this or that.  “She’ll LOVE it!”  Then they came up seven or eight times to confirm my favorite tea, my favorite candy bar (?), cookie, how I like my toast, what I like with the peanut butter, etc.  Elsie joined me in the middle of the hub-bub and cuddled with me.  About 30 minutes later I heard the excited pounding of feet and loud whispering of what they would say as they triumphantly entered our bedroom.  They sang “Jingle Bells” walking up the stairs and then cheered out QUITE merrily, “MERRY CHRISTMAS, MOMMY!” and produced an old cookie sheet tray with my breakfast.

It was complete with a Christmas tree ornament snagged from the tree.  A cold piece of toast with peanut butter and the letter “M” sprawled out with honey.  A milky way candy bar from the chocolate container.  A Christmas cookie from our cookie stash.  A piece of cinnamon candy cane loaf.  A lukewarm cup of tea.  I loved it.  I especially love thoughtfulness that went into it!

Elsie and I shared the candy bar.  =)

>Bedtime Prayers

>

Yesterday was probably one of my top most emotional days of this pregnancy.  I could liken it to transition during labor.  Intense!  But as I was tucking in the boys before bed and going over the hard and fast rule of staying in their room until 7:30, Jack leaked the information that they had planned to get up “early” to make me breakfast and wash the dishes and “put all their energy into being good helpers.”  They felt the strain of disobedience just as much as I did.  I told them that was fine, but just not before 7:30.  =)

Then Elijah proceeded to pray in his raspy voice, “Lord, thank you for giving me the gift of being silly.  I just love it so much.  Thank you for giving Nadine the gift of being able to play.  Thank you for giving Jack the gift of fighting and using his imagination to be a soldier.  Thank you for giving Elsie the gift of, um, having fun.  Thank you for Your gift of being boss of everything.  You do a really good job.”

I’m always blown away by what is going on in his little head.  On the 18th, it was the 7-year mark of the day when he came home from the hospital, after being there for 5 weeks.  What an incredible memory!  He always loves telling people that he was so tiny that he fit in a Christmas stocking!

>Can I open Christmas now?

>

Two sweet things today:
Lots of Christmas treats!

My traditional candy cane cinnamon sugar loaf with hazelnuts.

Shortbread cookies with chocolate drizzle.

Blackberry yummies.  Don’t know what they’re called and I’ve never made them before!

The second sweet thing: Elsie coming up to me and cupping her hand over my ear to whisper, “Can I open Christmas now?”

>White and Red

>

We have had our first few snows.  The last time, it stuck!  I am much too chicken to go outside in it just now, but the kids have had a blast for hours on end.  Their favorite thing to do is come inside for hot chocolate!
Dipping a candy cane in the hot chocolate is even better!

Then, a special pre-Christmas surprise package arrived from Grandma Weldon, complete with books about winter and snow…

Also, each of them received a snowman pillow case!  It will be perfect for spending the night on Christmas Eve at Grandma’s house!

Then, last night my sister and I went out to get a manicure and pedicure.  It was for her birthday, and also for my poor neglected toes that I can’t reach anymore.  They were beautified and are ready for labor and delivery now!  The color?  An Affair in Red Square.  I really think there is something delicious about being able to look at your toes after you’ve had a baby and smile.  Everything else is a bit frumpy!  They just make me, you know, smile. =)

>It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

>

Christmas is in the air… from pretty dresses to hot chocolate.

Our tree is lit with care.
LOVE this time of year…

Nadine had a Christmas tea party with her girlfriends.

At church, what Christmas party is complete without Bingo…
Prizes…

And line dancing!

Happy Birthday, Pop Pop!

Baby Cheyene
And this is about as good as I could get all afternoon of the cousins sitting next to eachother for a picture!

We are excited for both baby Weldons to arrive within the next couple weeks!  My belly is bursting, and I finally washed all the baby clothes today!

>Home Stretch

>

Yesterday baby hit 35 weeks in the cooker. I can’t bend over without holding my breath, and turning from one side to another in bed requires “the flop”. Nothing is graceful anymore. Putting on my socks requires great skill of dextrity and balance, of which I have none right now. Once they’re on, they’re on to stay. I’m grateful I haven’t burned my belly on the stove yet… that usually happens at least once, at least mildly. But I do love the tiny foot in my right side, constantly stretching and growing and reminding me that soon I will get to tickle that foot and kiss the nose that accompanies the little body housed in my crowded tummy. I am thrilled that in one more week, if I go into labor, the birth center where I’m going will let me deliver. We’re just so excited to meet her!
January 21st Matthew will be going to Haiti for a week with a team from our church. We’re excited for this opportunity! Please pray for our family here while he is gone, as we will have a new baby and sometimes the first couple weeks can be an extra bit challenging! If you would like to financially support the trip, we suggest you look at the website www.cpr-3.com which is the organization the team will be going with. You can make a tax-deductible check out to Gateway Church with Matthew’s name in the memo. You can mail it to our home, or to the church. I will include those two addresses at the end of this letter. Matthew’s health has been great. He continues to run, even in twenty-degree weather! He goes to the Dr. next week and will find out if there are any latest changes from his last round of blood work.
Nadine worked for two weeks straight on a fairy book, which consisted of a notebook with pages and pages of drawn fairies, their houses, and what they make. It was so fun to see her creativity blossom into those pages! She’s not really artsy, so this it was especially fun to watch. She prefers to take care of her stuffed animals, serve them tea five times a day from her tiny tea set, or play outside. This morning the boys were running around and she said, “Yes, they lost their convenience.” I’m not exactly sure what she meant by that.
Elijah’s sweet spot in life is scientific discoveries. Yesterday he made an electromagnetic device and had fun experimenting with it. His Science teacher online is “Dr. Algae” but he always calls him “Dr. Allergy”. It’s his favorite thing about school. He also has skill at remembering how to spell words, and just remembering in general! I pray that his ability to speak extremely loudly will be used for God’s glory. Sometimes I don’t think of it that way.
Jack, along with some help from his siblings, but I’d still say he’s the biggest culprit, cleans out our cupboards weekly. His ability to eat ginormous portions and STILL be hungry an hour later, never ceases to amaze me. From ten-inch carrots, to a huge bowl of oats with bananas AND blueberries, to three platefuls of spaghetti… yeah, I could go on. Oh, he also likes unsweetened coffee and espresso… though we don’t indulge him but with a sip here and there. His other enjoyment in life is shooting things and building things. He currently has a necklace made out of safety pins right now… temporarily replacing his usual necklace of chain or pretend gold. He “loves shiny things” so he says and calls most things golden. His pockets continue to bring me smiles whenever I empty them to do laundry. It’s always exciting to see what he thought was special enough to carry around ALL day in his pocket. A few coins (he has an uncanny knack at finding them), the tiny baby Jesus from the manger scene, angel wings from the other nativity set, a paper clip, a glass marble, a screw. He’s growing up, and after losing his bear SOMEwhere in the house, hasn’t slept with it for at least a week, and is very brave about it.
Elsie, Elsie, Elsie. Sometimes it just suits to say her name three times in a row. When we tuck her in bed at night it never ceases to amaze me how she sleeps with everything that’s in there. She has her bunny, her blanket, her baby, her books. She knows when one is missing. We’ve never had a child like her. She stays in the school room the whole morning and either colors or cuts paper with a little pair of scissors. “I need my cut,” she will say. She likes to get dressed. A lot. Before her head pokes through her shirt she will say, “Where is me?” The other day at breakfast she woke up her usual cheery self (I say that with a hint of sarcasm) and when someone chuckled or smiled in her direction she said, “It’s NOT FUNNY!” Which of course made us all laugh the more. She definitely likes to have fun, but maybe just not first thing in the morning.

I’ve been struggling with making time for my own personal time with God each day. It was so helpful to talk to Matt about it, confess my need for change, ask God to please remind me of His awesomeness and speak to my deaf heart so I can hear. The answer came this morning as I read Luke 5. As we seek the Lord about some changes to our family and Matt’s work, sometimes we have fear about the unknown. Jesus gave Simon a clear instruction that seemed a little impractical: to go out in the middle of the day, instead of at night, to catch some fish in the deep water. Whether Simon was obeying with faith, or out of exhaustion because there was nothing else to do, he obeyed. What he experienced was nothing short of a miracle! Then after they hauled all of those fish to the shore, Jesus told him “Do not be afraid anymore. From now on you will catch men [in order to free them]!” Then Simon left it all and followed Him. When we try to do things on our own, there is fear. When we leave it all up to Jesus, we are amazed and see His provision. This is something we are trying to embrace with our whole lives.

>Scaling the Heights

>

Today was an all-out family day!  The regular Sunday school was replaced with a family service at church, which was awesome.  We enjoyed great music from the CTI ministry team that was here.  Then our whole church packed grocery bags full of food for a Thanksgiving blessing to those in our community.  The kids had a blast, and everyone delivered them to people whom the Lord laid on their hearts to give the bags.

Then we surprised the kids and took them to a rock-climbing gym that is five minutes from our house!  We are totally stoked about this place.  Everyone but Elsie and I, climbed.

Elsie pretty much just enjoyed her rock-climbing shoes and the bouncy floor.
Elijah did so well climbing, until he discovered that you can “swing”, then he kept letting go so he could swing.
Jack also climbed all the way to the top on his first try, discovered he was really good at coming back down by pushing off the wall, and decided that he would only climb a few feet before bouncing off the wall to get down again.
Nadine found her sweet spot.  Something involving challenge, strength, endurance, and fun… all rolled into one compact package called rock climbing.

Matthew went really fast and did an awesome job.  Then Nadine matched his every climb and proved that she’s just as good as Daddy.

This particular wall was classified as a 5.8.  Not bad.  Oh, and Daddy didn’t quite make it as far as she did.

All in all, it was a great day!  Can’t wait until I can scale the heights… and I think I have some pretty hefty competition in my 8-yr old daughter!
